Event #9 of the 2025–2026 Grand Prix Series
Date: Saturday, February 21, 2026
Event overview
The Weaselhead X/C race takes runners along the south shore of the Glenmore Reservoir and into the Weaselhead Flats, with a return on Jackrabbit Trail. In February, the course is a mix of snow‑covered paths, icy patches, and packed dirt, with bare trees and the occasional squirrel or hardy winter bird for company. Spikes or cleats are strongly recommended.
This race has been part of the Grand Prix since the late 1980s. The first edition was held in 1987–88 at North Glenmore, directed by Bob Dumalanede. In the following years, Mary Flanagan, Kathy Taerum, and Bernardine van der Meer each took turns leading the race.
From the mid‑1990s through 2001, Marcel Lamontagne directed for seven seasons, often using the Jackrabbit Trail — a twisting wooded path with rolling hills that’s still a favourite among local runners. After that, Rob Stichbury ran the event for a full decade, trying out different start spots such as the 37th Street TUC.
Since 2011, Alan Lam has directed the race, with the post‑race social hosted at the Palliser–Bayview–Pumphill Community Association hall near South Glenmore Park. Under Alan, the Weaselhead race has become a steady favourite in the series, known for its challenging footing, sharp climbs, and the way it shows off a quieter side of Calgary’s winter landscape.
The 2026 edition celebrates both the 40th anniversary of the Grand Prix series and the long tradition of the Weaselhead race itself — a course that proves winter running can be tough, beautiful, and rewarding all at once.
