We’re saddened to share that Barrie Griffiths, one of the original Calgary Roadrunners and a steady presence in our club since the 1980s, has passed away on May 13. He was 87.

Barrie was part of those very first cross country races in 1986 and stayed involved for decades — running, volunteering, and helping shape the welcoming, all weather spirit the club is known for. He continued running the CRR cross-country events in his 70s, and kept on volunteering into his late 80s.

He gave countless hours to the Calgary Marathon, coordinating aid stations year after year. His dedication earned him a place in the Calgary Marathon Hall of Fame, a recognition that meant a lot to him and to everyone who worked alongside him.

Many of us will remember Barrie’s calm manner, humor, and the way he quietly made every event run a little smoother.

Our condolences to his family and friends. He’ll be missed across the Calgary running community.

A memorial service will be held at the Holy Cross Anglican Church (the date to be announced later).
