Human Performance Lab needs subjects for stress fracture study!
Hi,
My name is Katharina Schnackenburg and I am a MSc student with the Human Performance Lab conducting a study about stress fractures in athletes. It involves evaluating the 3D bone microarchitecture (with high-resolution computed tomography) and muscle function of female athletes that have developed a lower limb stress fracture and comparing it to the data of healthy athletes. Besides receiving your personal results about your body composition (by a DXA scan), bone density (with WHO classification: normal/osteopenia/osteoporosis), bone quality and muscle function, all participants with a stress fracture are offered an optional free rehabilitation program by the Running Injury Clinic.
I am mainly looking for female athletes with lower limb stress fractures, but I also need to find a matched healthy control for each of them. Therefore, interested female athletes without a stress fracture are welcome to contact me as well. The details (recruitment criteria, test details, participation time) of the study are as follows: Inclusion Criteria: Female, has medically confirmed lower limb stress fracture (e.g. tibial or metatarsal stress fracture) no older than 6 months (N/A for controls), 18 – 45 yrs old, premenopausal, active athlete (e.g. runner, basketball player, dancer,...).
Participants receive a free (optional) rehabilitation program (N/A for controls), complete questionnaires related to their current health status and physical activity, have their lower legs and one wrist scanned using a new bone imaging method (HR-pQCT) to assess bone quality, have their body composition and bone density assessed by whole body, hip and spine DXA scans, and have their muscle function assessed using tests of grip strength and calf and ankle muscle force.
Participation time is a baseline assessment of about 2 hrs, a 6 week follow-up of about 1.5 hrs and a one-year follow-up of about 2 hrs. Additionally, rehab participants will have 2 appointments with a Running Injury Clinic physiotherapist.
If you are interested in participating or if you have any further questions about the study, please contact me by email (keschnac@ucalgary.ca).
Thank you very much,
Katharina Schnackenburg
